NC Veterans Expeditions

Veterans Expeditions

Outdoor Rock Climbing provides a unique opportunity for veterans to experience a variety of health benefits that are particularly relevant to post-military service. Musculoskeletal benefits are derived from utilizing stabilizer muscles and body weight, instead of traditional weightlifting and impact exercises. Cardio benefits come from extended heart and breathing rates for long periods of time in challenging physical positions. Coordination and Balance are improved through simultaneously working muscle groups that do not typically function together. Flexibility is a key staple of climbing, and the most common cause for athletic injury when not given attention. Climbing keeps the body flexible as we age. Gratification and motivation are constant in this sport. Anxiety is commonplace in the veteran community. Rock climbing is easy to learn, fast-paced and tangible, providing a healthy outlet. Problem Solving is accomplished on the rocks through many different solutions and options, with no single correct answer. The wall is a puzzle, requiring mental and physical acuity, building resilience which translates to life. Mindfulness occurs when all of the mental space that is typically scattered and focused on many things becomes concentrated on a single high-intensity activity. The practice of removing oneself from distraction in order to focus is becoming more and more important in our tech driven era. Community is formed when climbers interact as belayers, spotters, and problem solvers. Climbing breaks down social barriers and models the camaraderie similar to that found in military service.

Patagonia Mountaineering Expeditions

The alpine setting in a foreign country sets the stage for a challenging, positive, life-changing experience for vets. OWG assembles a team each January comprised of alumni from other OWG expeditions over the previous year. We spend several days in glaciated territory and attempt a summit of a challenging peak. Please get in touch with us regarding application.

Making Ecotherapy Possible

Backpack, sleeping mat, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, headlamp, bowl, spoon, hiking shoes, socks, pants, shirt, camp shoes, camp clothes, toothbrush, ice axe, crampons, gaiters, toothpaste, water bottle, filters, first aid..

The list goes on. The list is a barrier due to its cost and knowledge of whats needed. Once this obstacle is overcome, ecotherapy becomes an accessible tool within reach. One constant throughout history in medicine is the advice to get exercise outdoors. When someone has the gear issued to them, and has a chance to expedition with guides who show them how to use it, getting out and camping becomes easy.
